As you enter the
Kern River Valley, located 45 miles east of Bakersfield, you are surrounded by
1.1 million acres of Sequoia National Forest. Traveling further northeast
brings you to the historic and quaint town of Kernville. Kernville is located
in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range and at an elevation of 2,500
ft. Kern River Cottage Gardens is located
on a private estate, owned and operated by Charley Erickson and his daughter,
Jan Mazzone. Charley and Jan initially started the Cottage Gardens to
provide people with the opportunity to experience a truly enchanting and unique
garden wedding with memories to last a lifetime. When visitors found the beauty
of the gardens, walkways, and custom table settings, they began to reserve the
facilities for an ever expanding list of events and special
occasions.Upon your arrival at Kern River Cottage Gardens, you'll find a beautiful private residence atop a hill decorated with extraordinary brickwork. Events take place in the back yard gardens that is highlighted with multi-levels of bricks, boulders, trees, and flowers all with an ambience of white lights. Entering the back yard through the white arched gate gives you a walking tour of the entire property.  The yard is complete with an arbor that is 20 feet wide
by 60 feet long. The entire structure is lined with white lights. Guests are
seated for the ceremony in rows of individual white chairs under the arbor and
on one of the many levels, depending on group size. The setting provides shade
in the day and offers enchanted lighting during the evening. There are also
four custom umbrellas, personally designed by Charley, ranging in size from 12
to 25 feet in diameter. All of the umbrellas are strung with lights that are
controlled by individual dimmer switches for that perfect mood. The area will
seat about 125 people.The interior of Kern River Cottage Gardens provides rooms in which the wedding party can prepare for the ceremony and reception. Later after the ceremony takes place, coordinators can prepare the rest of the property for the reception. Caterers can even make use of the kitchen in preparing food service. The home is equipped with a unique professional sound system that allows music to be piped inside and out. As evening sets in, the umbrellas and arbor sparkle  with hundreds of tiny white lights to give an incredible
atmosphere to any special occasion.After the ceremony and reception begins to wind down, the bride and groom can make their way to an awaiting car to take them to any of the several bed and breakfast inns in the area. The newly married couple do not even have to travel for their honeymoon. Numerous activities are available in the Kern River Valley, such as white water rafting and kayaking, rock climbing, hiking, boating, fishing, jet skiing, water skiing, browse village shops, or just relax in the great outdoors.
