Welcome to the Kern Plateau. The diversity of this unique area provides
a wide range of camping facilities for the Forest visitor. If you are looking
for a developed camp ground, an area to relax and get away from it all, or a
place to hitch up your horses, here is a guide to what you will find in the
high country. Enjoy your stay and come visit again.
DISPERSED CAMPING AREAS - On the Kern Plateau you will find many
dispersed camping areas free of charge which are great for visitors with
self-contained units and large groups. These areas may not have facilities and
require a campfire permit. Some of the more popular areas include Troy Meadow
overflow, Fish Creek overflow, Bonita Meadow, South Fork of the Kern River
around Kennedy Meadows and Big Meadow.
- HORSE MEADOW:
- 38 miles northeast of Kernville via Mtn. 99, Sherman Pass Rd. (22S05)
and Cherry Hill Rd. (22S12). Paved and dirt roads; 41 units including 15
suitable for RV's up to 22'; restrooms; piped water; no trash collection. Elev.
7,600 feet. Open Jun. to Nov. Fee $10 per night.

- TROY MEADOW:
- 53 miles northeast of Kernville via Mtn. 99 and Sherman Pass Rd.
(22S05), or 34 miles west of Hwy. 395 via Nine Mile Canyon Rd. (J41). Paved
roads; 73 units including 10 suitable for RV's up to 24'; restrooms; piped well
water; no trash collection. Elev. 7,800 feet. Open Jun. to Nov. Fee $10 per
night.

- FISH CREEK:
- 54 miles northeast of Kernville via Mtn. 99 and Sherman Pass Rd.
(22S05), or 32 miles west of Hwy. 395 via Nine Mile Canyon Rd. (J41). Paved
roads; 40 units including 12 suitable for RV's up to 24'; restrooms; piped well
water; no trash collection. Elev. 7,400 feet. Open Jun. to Nov. Fee $10 per
night.

- KENNEDY MEADOWS:
- 60 miles northeast of Kernville via Mtn. 99 and Sherman Pass Rd.
(22S05), or 26 miles west of Hwy. 395 via Nine Mile Canyon Rd. (J41). Paved
roads; 38 units including 15 suitable for RV's up to 30'; restrooms; piped well
water; no trash collection. Elevation 5,800 feet. Open all year. Fee $10 per
night.

- PACK OUT WHAT YOU PACK IN! - Leaving your trash laying around
will encourage the bears to come into camp.
- PUBLIC PASTURES - Public pastures are available on the Kern
Plateau for use by horses and stock animals. These include the following
meadows: Big North and West, Cannell, Manter, Beach and Paloma. These areas are
free of charge and are on a first-come, first-serve basis. Camping is allowed
adjacent to these pastures.
- TRAILHEAD FACILITY - Additional stock facilities and overnight
accommodations for hikers and horseback riders are provided at the Blackrock
Trailhead site located seven miles north of Blackrock Visitor Information
Station. This site allows a one-night stay for visitors who plan to travel into
the Golden Trout Wilderness, first come, first served, free of charge. No
water.
- HOW LONG CAN I STAY? - The length of stay at any campground or
dispersed camping area is limited to a total of 14 days in a 30 day period.
- VEHICLES - All vehicles must be parked on the designated spur
adjacent to the campsite. Troy Meadow and Fish Creek Campgrounds are the only
campgrounds that permit Off-highway vehicles. They are not be operated within
the campground except to enter or leave. Joy riding in the campground is not
permitted.
- QUIET HOURS - Quiet hours are between 10 pm and 6 am.
- DOGS - Dogs are welcome in the campground as long as they are
kept on a leash at all times.
MORE INFORMATION: Blackrock Visitor Information Station is
located 50 miles northeast of Kernville or 38 miles west of Hwy. 395. Forest
information and permits for fires, wilderness and woodcutting are available
from June to November. The Visitor Information Station is open Thur. thru Mon.
8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For further information please call Blackrock at (760)
