| A product of the high desert, Jim Murray has tried to put the
feeling of the desert in the paintings, drawings, carvings and cartoons, also
trying to incorporate in his artwork the California sea tradition of the whales
Owning an original or print of this California artist is taking a piece of the high desert or the California coast.
Steatite carving has been a tradition carried out by the Chumish Indians for hundreds of years. The steatite carved by Jim comes from an old mine sitting on the east side of a desert hill in Lucerne valley.
Steatite is a stone that holds heat well and has been used for cooking utensils, pipes and figurines for as far back as you want to page through the book of time.
