I agree with Gary & Sparky. Headquarters is a good choice. You shouldn't need reservations this time of year. There are also dispersed camping areas (free) along the Kern between Kernville and Fairview. If you'd like a little more security, I'd go with the private, Rivernook Campground. They have hookups, cable, etc. They also have shower & head facilities. They are not much higher in fees than the CLM run campgrounds but a lot cleaner. And, if there is a problem the manager will take care of it fast. It's close to town and they do have a few spots on the river. Their number is: 760-376-2705
Forget the Forest Service. They have little to do with campgrounds other than setting policy and fee rates for the concessionaires. You're really dealing with California Land Management in the Sequoia Forest campgrounds.
